The focus will be on your poetry as we read and consider the works of poets who have found inspiration through meditation, ecstaticism, dream, magic and other forms of bringing forth the unconscious. We will discuss different mystic methods that have been used by poets throughout the ages to uncover language for poems. We will delve into the mystic nature of poetry by attempting to use several of these methods to craft our own poetry. Each week, there will be time for you to workshop a poem that you write “under the influence” of one of these methods. Some poets that we will look at will be: The French surrealists, the Sufi Ecstatics, Sappho, Hannah Weiner’s Clairvoyant Journal, poets of the San Francisco Renaissance, Alice Notley, the Beats, d.a. Levy, and others. You will also have the opportunity to share with the class poets that you consider “mystic”—bringing in their poems and sharing with the class the methods you think they used to conjure the “othered” state.

Register for the workshop by phone at 215.382.7811 or online at the University City Arts League.
